Abstract/Summary:
With the advent of modern recording techniques, recording professionals have been coming up with different ways to add a sense of auditory space back into their recordings. These techniques range from tape echo to digital reverb units, and bathroom reverb chambers to elevator shaft reverb chambers. This thesis will dive into how yesterday's and today's recording studios utilize the "natural" space around them to create auditory space within the music they are producing. A look into how the spaces at UMass Lowell's Durgin Hall can be utilized by students in the Sound Recording Technology program for reverb will be conducted. Their sonic characteristics and spectral qualities will be measured and analyzed. Finally, I will build the infrastructure for a reverb chamber in an emergency stairwell of the building. The challenges involved with security, noise, building codes, and running cable will be addressed. The final sonic characteristics and suggestions for microphone placement will also be discussed. The newly constructed chamber will also be used in comparison to Power Station's stairwell chamber in New York City through a cover of the song "Summer of `69" by Bryan Adams.
