G. E. Lessing's Der junge Gelehrte was the first play of his performed on stage. This translation is the second of the play, following a publication edited by Ernest Bell in 1878, in which all of Lessing's comedies appeared in complete translation. This translation can be used as a 21 st century version of the play which attempts to reach a compromise between 18th and 21st century language. The critical introduction includes an analysis of the secondary literature to date on this play, and an analysis of the Bell translation and a presentation of the critical issues present in this piece. |
