An Analysis Of Characteristics Of Play Scripts Translation

Angels in America, a representative work of the great playwright Tony Kushner in America, is a play containing politics, religions and homosexual contents, which is praised as the epochal work of literary. Many researches are conducted to analyze this work from different perspectives, including the research on the author himself, on the images of Jews and the dilemma of the homosexual characters in it, while other researches are focused on the opera also named Angels in America, such as the actors and the audience’reactions to that opera. There is no published Chinese translation version of this book until now, so the translator tried to do the translation of Actl and made this translation report.This thesis analyzed the characteristics of play translation based on the translation practice of Actl, Angels in America. The first part of this thesis introduced the recent situation of research on play translation and pointed out that the principles of literariness and performability of play translation are still the hot topics now. Besides, it introduced some essential information about the author and this work, and also the pre-translation preparing work. The second part of it discussed two obvious characteristics of play translation with some detailed examples of words and sentences. And those two characteristics of colloquialism and stage directions are widely used in play composition. The translator reported her experience and lessons in process of finishing this translation task in the last part of this thesis, and made a conclusion of this thesis of course.
