When I paint I like to work not only from what I see, but also from what I know exists. I consider myself a figurative painter emphasizing portraiture. I use informal compositions that are more interesting than traditional poses. Some of my work also displays a sense of humor and a twist to formal posing. I work from photographs, taking quick snapshots that show both relaxed and energetic poses. These scenes are usually captured in the neighborhood where I grew up. The people I photograph are friends and family. Some of my major influences are Mary Cassatt, Lucian Freud, Michael Vasquez and Kehinde Wiley. |
