Abstract/Summary:
The Progressive era was a time of dramatic change for the nation and the state of Connecticut as both were rapidly advancing from an agricultural to an industrial based society. Citizens were demanding reform and new federal government measures to enhance the quality of their lives. What began as a Populist movement in the late nineteenth century, was by the early twentieth century, taking hold in a broad, new movement called Progressivism. This movement centered on the role of the government and its involvement in improving the social and economic conditions of Americans. Politicians from around the country as well as from the State of Connecticut were actively engaged in this great debate. The thesis that follows examines the participants and events that shaped this period of history for the nation as well as in the State of Connecticut and to also examine the role the state played in this movement.
