Abstract/Summary:
The study of adipose tissue metabolism by its endocrine, paracrine and intracrine properties allows to better understand its implication in the etiology of obesity in human. We examined associations between messenger and plasma levels of adiponectin and metabolic profile in women, as well as correlations between plasma and tissue levels of sex steroids in men. A regional difference was observed between adipose tissue compartments in adiponectin messenger, which were not correlated with variables of the study. A high plasma adiponectin level was a significant predictor of a favorable metabolic profile. Regional differences in androgens levels of adipose tissue depots were observed in obese men. In summary, our studies demonstrated that subcutaneous and ometal adipose tissue showed important differences in adiponectin messenger production and androgen concentrations.
