Abstract/Summary:
The goal of this research is the design, prototyping, and testing of a system to optically scan the bottom of a human foot for the fabrication of customized foot orthotics. A need for an inexpensive system capable of capturing the shape of the bottom of the foot in three different positions was identified. Structured light was selected as the scanning technique.; The design of a hardware prototype has been presented. Accompanying software intended to work with the hardware has also been created. This software is capable of interacting with some of the hardware components, calibrating the entire system, and generating a list of points in 3D space outlining the shape of the foot.; Preliminary testing has been conducted on the system, verifying its functionality and accuracy to a reasonable degree. However, further testing has been recommended, as well as modifications and additions to the current system.
