Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated self-image, its factor structure, and psychological well-being among 574 Chinese adolescents. Specifically, this study evaluated psychometric properties such as factor structure, reliabilities, and validity of Self-Image Questionnaire for Young Adolescents (SIQYA; Petersen, 1984) for Chinese adolescents. The factor structure and psychometric information analyzed based on a Chinese sample was discussed with respect to findings from Western society. Revisions to the existing instrument were made to improve its suitability for use in Chinese context. This study also examined the relationships between depressive symptoms and three important factors of self-image: social relationships, emotional tone, and body image. The results of factor analysis showed that the original 9- factor structure of SIQYA did not hold as expected. A 5-factor structure was retained after revision, including Social Relationships, Emotional Tone, Adjustment Abilities, Life Satisfaction and Body Image. The results of regression analysis supported the hypothesis that depressive symptoms are inversely related to social relationships, emotional tone, and body image. As expected, results indicated that there is a significant negative relationship between depressive symptoms and social relationships among Chinese youths. Implications of these findings were discussed.
