Abstract/Summary:
Play is a child's main occupation and peers are some of the most influential individuals within a child's social life. Playgroups are one of the ways that occupational therapists may incorporate play into an intervention, while also facilitating social interaction. To gain an understanding of the effect of playgroups on social participation, a systematic literature review was conducted to answer the question: What is the evidence that supports the effectiveness of playgroups as an intervention strategy for improving social skills? Throughout the current literature unstructured playgroups and structured playgroups have emerged as the most commonly used playgroup interventions for promoting social skill development. Findings support the use of playgroups as a therapeutic medium to promote peer interaction and improve social skills.
