Abstract/Summary:
A biometric is a unique physical or behavioral trait that can be used to recognize or verify the identity of an individual. There is an ongoing quest to find new and unique biometrics that can be incorporated in current authentication systems. The use of skin as a biometric is a very recent and novel concept and has attracted the attention of industry as well as the academic community. Reflectance spectroscopy is one of the most widely used methods for optical exploration of the skin. Even though it has been extensively researched and implemented, acquiring accurate and reproducible skin reflectance spectra is still a challenge. Moreover, very few groups have investigated the use of experimental skin reflectance data as a potential biometric. In this thesis, an experimental setup for acquiring skin reflectance spectra is implemented and the acquired skin spectra are analyzed for application in skin biometrics.
