Lower limb bilateral symmetry of sit-to-stand transfer: A biomechanical analysis

Abstract/Summary:
Being able to execute a movement from a seated to a standing position reflects on an individual's mobility and is essential for independent living. The main objective of this study was to test the assumption of lower limb bilateral symmetry for the sit-to-stand transfer. The dependent measures were joint range of motion, time to peak joint moments, peak joint moments and total joint work. The design of this study also allowed for comparison of sit-to-stand biomechanics between two sample groups that differed in age.; Range of motion and time to peak moment variables appear to be equivalent between legs. The method of classifying legs, specific to this investigation, masked the asymmetries present at the knee joint. This investigation detected few between group differences for the dependent measures analysed. The clearest differences, while not statistically significant, were observed for knee peak moment and knee total work measures. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
