Abstract/Summary:
Pumpkin growers often require postemergent control of grass and broadleaf weeds which require a tank-mixture of halosulfuron with the grass herbicides, sethoxydim or clethodim. Two greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the effects of halosulfuron tank-mixed with sethoxydim or clethodim and various adjuvants on pumpkin plant injury and grass control. A field study was also conducted to evaluate the same tank-mixtures as described previously in an attempt to identify better weed management practices in pumpkins. For the greenhouse study, the specific adjuvant used with halosulfuron did not influence the level of pumpkin injury or final plant dry weight. The antagonism of sethoxydim or clethodim when tank-mixed with halosulfuron was dependent on grass weed species and adjuvant. For the field study, tank-mixing halosulfuron with either grass herbicide resulted in increased grass species biomass, greater pumpkin plant injury, and reduced pumpkin yields compared to application of grass herbicides alone.
