Abstract/Summary:
To develop a high speed railroad system, study of its dynamics is of utmost importance. In particular, the interaction of wheel and rail through their contacts are crucial to dynamic behavior of the railroad system. Therefore, the method for finding the contacts between wheel and the rail plays an important role in overall dynamic of railroad systems. The contact points between the wheel and the rail are found by forming the contact constraints and applying Newton iteration to locate them. It is shown that there exist configurations for which the Jacobian of the contact constraints is singular and Newton iteration will fail. This leads to not being able to simulate practical scenarios to study derailment, hunting, etc. It is the objective of this study to develop an approach to find contact points for such cases.
