Abstract/Summary:
Evidence based practice has become an important health care tool in the last decade. This approach is based on the integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values. Decision making tools produced with this approach are called clinical practice guidelines. Although an increasing number of guidelines is published, systematic reviews clearly show that their impact is often limited. This has been associated with various barriers. We designed a study, based on self administered questionnaire, in an attempt to assess some of the specific barriers experienced by periodontologists in France and Canada. Our results show that these clinicians, although generally positive about guidelines and confident in those developed by other clinicians, express some concerns about the risk of increase in suits or disciplinary actions.
