Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the applicability of infiltration basins in removing different contaminants of surface runoff from different land use type in Los Angeles. In order to simplify the calculation, one-dimensional mathematical modelling was used to determine the contaminants concentrations one meter below the surface of the soil. Copper, diazinon, and fecal coliforms were chosen to represent the three major groups of contaminants: heavy metals, pesticides and microorganisms.; Among the three chosen soil types, clay is the best soil for retaining contaminants in the infiltration basin based on infiltration rate---pore water velocity, saturation time and contaminant retardation. Due to variation of soil pH and other factors which are not included in the modelling, it is recommended to have further experimental evaluations on the actual performance of clay, loam and their mixtures.
