Abstract/Summary:
This action research study sought to articulate how Da'naxda'xw Awaetlala First Nation conceptions of tourism development in their traditional territory could inform a sustainable tourism strategy. They wish to expand on their existing small scale tourism program at their traditional village site to which they are currently repatriating. Using an unstructured interview method, this project sought to elucidate their own values, beliefs and visions about how sustainable tourism could be conducted in their territory. With repatriation being a dominant feature of the band's current activities, a key finding of the report was that the band should reassess the level of passion that exists for tourism development. The study also concluded that a mixed program of cultural and non-cultural elements was important to market success. While size and capacity were identified as hindrances, the band has a history of successful economic partnerships that they could leverage for future tourism development.*; *Gilakas'la means 'Come as you are with all that you are' in Kwakwala; it is often translated as 'Welcome'.
