Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine collegiate dancers' perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate in relationship to perceptions of perfectionism and team cohesion. Dancers (n = 148) from 16 collegiate teams completed a demographic questionnaire, the Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire-2, the Sport-Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and the Group Environment Questionnaire. Multiple regression analyses revealed that dancers' perceptions of a more task-oriented climate were related to higher scores on all four team cohesion dimensions [Attraction to Group-Task (beta = 0.511, t = 6.977, p < .001), Attraction to Group-Social (beta = 0.435, t = 5.101, p < .001), Group Integration-Task (beta = 0.712, t = 10.945, p < .001), Group Integration-Social (beta = 0.506, t = 6.644, p < .001)], and two perfectionism dimensions [Perceived Coach Pressure (beta = 0.133, t = 2.127, p = .035), Personal Standards (beta = 0.247, t = 2.849, p < .005)]. Perceptions of a more ego-oriented climate were related to higher scores on all four perfectionism dimensions, and lower scores on three team cohesion dimensions. A more comprehensive overview of the findings from all analyses including the relationships between perfectionism and team cohesion are provided in the results.
