Abstract/Summary:
To achieve energy independence, an extensive feasibility study was conducted for Eel River Bar (ERB) First Nation of potential renewable energy resources, specifically solar, wind, and biomass, based on economic and environmental benefits. Detailed local resource investigations were made into the most promising approach, i.e., wood biomass fueling a cogeneration plant with district heating. The approach is predicted to make ERB permanently energy independent, have no added CO2 emissions in operation, create local jobs, and have a 5- to 8-year payback. Detailed analysis of pilot plant initial designs for short-term implementation indicates a 10-year payback. Solar hot water systems also have similar benefits.
