The security of U.S. critical infrastructures; fresh water, electricity and fuel supplies are by their very nature crucial to the health, safety and well-being of the nation. These sectors each rely on networks of Industrial Control Systems or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems to function and the impact of a breach to such a network would have catastrophic consequences. This research paper examines the vulnerabilities of these systems and evaluates one promising technique for thwarting network intrusions into critical infrastructure organizations using anomaly detection. Creation of this report generated several recommendations for educators, taxpayers, lawmakers and those who work in critical infrastructure sectors as to how to improve security. Due to the limited data surrounding U.S. private utility breaches, further research is necessary to explore funding for securing critical infrastructure organizations. |
