Abstract/Summary:
An Radio Frequency (RF) ranging system typically uses a measurement of the carrier's phase to provide the range. There are many problems associated with this technique in providing an accurate range. Multipath is one of the dominant effects on the phase measurement, especially when a high level of accuracy is required. This thesis introduces a multipath mitigation algorithm for a Frequency Hopping (FH) ranging system, which is working in a two-ray multipath environment without noise. Two mathematical models are presented and the relationship between the direct signals, the indirect signals and the composite signals is investigated. The technique is capable of rejecting multipath for a FH ranging system, when the frequency difference is small and when the reflection coefficient remains constant for all frequencies.
