Abstract/Summary:
Particle tracking velocimetry is an image-based measurement technique that can determine the three components of particle motion in three dimensions. Two specific systems were developed to examine different scales of volumes. Macro-scale volumes can be examined using a multiple camera system, while limited optical access restricts examination of micro-scale volumes to a single camera system.;From this work, it was found that the two camera macro-scale system is limited to using 100 particles in the volume. The micro-scale system was experimentally validated, and its accuracy was determined.;A general particle tracking algorithm was developed and applied to both systems. This algorithm consisted of the steps of particle identification in images, three-dimensional reconstruction, and particle tracking through space and time. A simulation was performed to optimize each step in the process. Experimental measurements applied the process in real world conditions, and showed that the systems work in experimental conditions...
