Abstract/Summary:
Scope and Method of Study. With the advent of revolutionary sensor rich smart phones, e.g. iPhone, there is a growing interest in building a mobile phone networks, where phone is only used for calls, but for a wide variety of human centric sensing application. Given the limited resource, e.g. battery life, and privacy concern, scalability has been the central challenge of building suck kind of sensing networks. In this thesis, we propose a novel Framework for Incentive Compatible Ubiquitous Sensing, a.k.a. FICUS, where we are trying to address this issue by designing and incorporating a specific mechanism based on game theory. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to introduce algorithmic game theory into the design and deployment of the emerging people centric urban scale sensing system. Real application deployment shows that our architecture show great potential in leveraging the promising application of ubiquitous sensing.;Findings and Conclusions. As smart phone continue to evolve, it becomes a natural and powerful platform for people centric sensing. By taking advantage of the various build-in sensors of off-the-shelf smart phone, such as iPhone, we are able to leverage a network of mobile sensing. Incorporating certain carefully designed auction mechanism, in our case, VCG auction model, we are able to mobilize the human based architecture and provide reliable sensing data for a wide range of critical applications.
