Ubiquitous knowledge environment (UKE) is the general tendency of informationsociety and of future libraries. The creation, organization, spread and usage ofknowledge that ubiquitous environment emphasizes enable users acquire and createknowledge unconsciously. However, while bringing great opportunities, UKE alsoposes great challenges to the libraries. Libraries need to adjust their currentenvironment and service modes to adapt to the development of UKE.This article makes a comprehensive survey on UKE, ubiquitous libraries and thelibrary services under UKE and points out the challenges that libraries face, based onwhich it is suggested that the new service modes of ubiquitous libraries should beoriented by user demands. The article firsts makes an overview of UKE and the development of librariesunder UKE, from the basic concepts of UKE, the change of user demands and keytechnologies related to ubiquitous libraries. Then it introduces how UKE is applied inlibrary services in both China and abroad. While analyzing their common features, itmainly discusses the ubiquitous libraries in China, the US, South Korea and Malaysia.Based on the discussion and analysis, the article proposes the suggestion that libraryservice modes should be constructed based on the context awareness of users. It alsomakes an analysis to different cases and discusses how libraries can make invention totheir service modes and provide personalized information recommendation throughtaking part in social network and helping users transfer their tacit knowledge intoexplicit knowledge.
