Abstract/Summary:
Due to increasingly large personal photography collections, current systems for searching and browsing digital photography do not adequately provide an optimal user experience. Search functions assume the user knows that they are looking for, a lack of automation places the burden of inputting relevant information on to the user, and browsing photographs is a time consuming process. This thesis has researched relevant theories in the designing of a system which places the photograph and its contents at the centre of all interactions. Photographs contain the many connections we make in our everyday lives and therefore act as portals to memories. Through exploring the connections which exist in our photographic collections, we are able to recall and remember memories, which allows us to reconfirm our place in the universe. Technology plays a subtle role in the designed system, providing aid and increased interaction between a user and their photographic collection. By creating the parameters with which to operate the designed system, the user can focus on their memories and allow them to provide the inspiration for exploring his or her own photographic collection.
