Abstract/Summary:
Health care has long lagged behind the industrial world with the utilization of technology. However, with recent promotions to increase patient safety and quality of care, health care is transitioning from the paper medical record system and turning towards technology, particularly the electronic medical record (EMR). The implementation of an EMR can impact the way nurses practice and provide their care. This research study used a qualitative approach to develop an understanding of the nurses' lived experience using the EMR to explore the integration of health care information technology and the impact it may have on patient safety and quality of care. The nurses who participated in this study provided their perception of the patient medical record in the format of electronic medical record. The results of this study extracted four common themes: necessity of sufficient training, improved communication, workflow efficiency, and lessons learned.
