Abstract/Summary:
A novel simple unequal Forward Error Correction (FEC) scheme is proposed to reduce Error Correcting Code (ECC) overhead in digital video transmission. In the proposed scheme, we present a novel yet simple method to reduce overhead in digital video transmission based simply on packet classification because, different packets in digital video transmission have different importance to the quality of the reconstructed video. Many techniques have been proposed to improve video streaming over wireless networks. For instance, unequal error protection schemes have been proposed in [10], [6], [14] and [7] to take into account the non-uniformly distributed importance of frames in a GOP. In [16], [5] and [17] diverse FEC and Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) and FEC schemes have been proposed to improve video delivery over wireless network.;In the proposed scheme, we initially used the closed form equations derived in [10] to estimate ECC overhead in both equal and unequal error protection, study the packet loss rates for I, P, B and audio frames and then devise a novel variable FEC scheme to reduce ECC overhead in digital video transmission. From the simulation results, we show that our proposed scheme significantly reduces the ECC overhead and the computational complexity compared to existing techniques.
