Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), which provides better flexibility and networks access anytime, anyway than their wired counterpart, is undergoing rapid development. Furthermore, with the ever-increasing bandwidth and the development of video encodec, video transmission over WLAN has become an important part of WLAN applications and is witnessing more wide prospects. On the other hand, with the characteristics of wireless channel and the video application characterized by massive data, hard real-time requirements, improving the quality of video transmission over WLAN has become the focus and difficulty of research. The research on video transmission over WLAN is carried out only in recent years, having many problems needed to research and resolve.In this paper, the profound research on wireless video transmission technology is carried out, with the emphasis on Fine Granularity Scalability coding and the video transmission over WLAN. On the basis of these research works, this thesis makes instructive exploration for video transmission over WLAN and its main work include:1. The profound researches on FGS and wireless video transmission techniques are carried out.2. The video transmission techniques over WLAN based IEEE 802.11 are summarized and analysed in detail.3. The profound research on UXP (unequal erasure protection) technique for progressive video streaming, which especially caters for wireless video transmission, is carried out. Furthermore, improved method for UXP RTP enabling different protection policy for base layer and enhancement layer video streaming is presented.4. A new adaptive cross-layer video transmission technique is proposed based on the research on the techniques of video transmission over 802.11 WLAN,and it's proved to be an effective method improving the quality of end-to-end video transmission.5. An improved temporal error concealment algorithm for the video transmission over wireless channel proposed by this thesis, coupled with an adaptive error concealment method, is applied to wireless video transmission, so the better video quality is achieved.
