Abstract/Summary:
Technology now plays a critical role in supporting and facilitating work processes in organizations. The implementation of technology has been a common, yet challenging task for organizations. This thesis attempts to examine various impacts of technology implementation on individual behaviors with three essays. Specifically, this thesis investigates how organizations can help users resolve their uncertainty brought by technology implementations and how technology implementations influence users’ attitudes and behaviors.;The first essay investigates how governments can help citizens resolve their uncertainty about electronic government (e-government). I propose an integrated model of citizens’ adoption of e-government services and examine two means of uncertainty reduction – i.e., transparency and trust. The results provide support for the hypotheses. This study contributes to the research on e-government implementation and provides insights into the management of public uncertainty with e-government.;The second essay examines a specific work-related behavior – i.e., job crafting – as a consequence of technology implementations. I develop a model of employees' job crafting in the context of technology implementations. The results show that personality traits, technology-enabled opportunity, and technology self-efficacy have both direct and interaction effects on employees' job crafting intentions. This study contributes to the literature by introducing and examining an important consequence of technology implementations.;The third essay investigates how organizations can help employees resolve uncertainty about a newly implemented technology and enhance their job satisfaction. Drawing on the uncertainty management theory, I propose that organizational fairness is an important means of reducing employees’ uncertainty in evaluating a new technology. I further argue that employees’ perceptions of a technology are related to their job satisfaction. The results show that the relationships between employees’ fairness perceptions, technology perceptions, and job satisfaction are moderated by individual differences. This study provides insights into how organizations can manage users’ uncertainty in an organizational context and how technology implementations may influence employees’ job satisfaction.;Overall, these three studies contribute to research on technology implementation in general and research on e-government and organizational behavior in particular.
