The purpose of this study was to explore how older women view their lives from the perspective of Erik Erikson's last stage of psychosocial development. The main theme that emerged from this study was the importance of support systems, both social and religious/spiritual in regards to successfully completing this stage of development. All participants were able to list a source of support which has helped them face the challenges that emerge as an older adult. Another important theme that emerged was the ability of these women to accept the idea of death. The women who were comfortable in discussing death, were those who are content with their lives, what their lives were and what their lives have become. This study found that out of 12 participants, 11 find themselves upholding integrity and in contrast, one participant represents despair.
