Abstract/Summary:
One of the ways that schools are trying to keep up with the global community is by integrating technology into classrooms. This qualitative case study examines the integration of interactive whiteboards in instruction, and students' perceptions of the technology use in learning. A total of four teachers and twenty-seven seniors within a social studies department were used as participants. The data collection measures included observations and surveys of participating teachers and discussions with participating students that were guided by focused questions. The data collected was coded, grouped and emerging themes were used to develop the findings section. The findings revealed that despite the availability of sophisticated technology in the classroom, the participating teachers simply used interactive whiteboards as an overhead projector or LCD projector for rudimentary tasks. Student-participants expressed their disappointment in the lack of technology integration in their classroom learning. The practical implications of the study are discussed.
