Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this project was to develop a meaningful nature-based curriculum designed to connect at-risk youth back to their land and community, create a sustainable relationship between youth and their surrounding land, and open doors to work, food, and educational opportunities through the use of agriculture. This enabled youth to make healthy food choices and promote and support food justice in their community. Methods used were interactive class lectures and discussions, guest lectures and projects, field trips visiting local farms, hands-on projects, video, reading assignments, journaling, and a capstone project. Based on successful completion of their capstone project, student feedback and project evaluation, using agriculture as a tool to connect youth with nature and natural processes created a positive impact. Students were empowered to take their place within the agricultural community and thrived with these "real world" connections. This, in turn, empowered them to take action as they became an integral part of strengthening and supporting their community.
