Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to understand how farm women conceptualise food safety within the context of their daily food provisioning activities. A secondary analysis of interview transcripts from a study exploring the food provisioning practices of farm women in Alberta (n = 6), Ontario (n = 6), and Nova Scotia (n = 10) was conducted. The analysis revealed that farm women's conceptualisation of food safety, which stems from their role as both food producers and gatekeepers of the family meal, can be summed up as knowing what's gone into it, a concept that also includes healthfulness and quality. From a health promotion perspective, this study demonstrates how an exploration of the day-to-day activities of feeding the family can reveal how the environment in which farm women live and work influences their understanding of food safety and health.
