Abstract/Summary:
In this study, 215 participants comprised of 60 father adult-son dyads and 95 individual adult-sons were recruited through convenience and snow-ball sampling from a medium-sized Midwestern university. Each one of the participants was asked to retrospectively report on affectionate communication, satisfaction, and solidarity within the father-son relationship dyad. This process was completed through a series of quantitative questionnaires. This study revealed that fathers reported expressing more affectionate communication, satisfaction, solidarity, and overall satisfaction in the dyadic relationships than their sons. Findings also concluded that positive correlations existed between each of the variables within the study. The results of this study help continue to build understanding, encourage application, and contribute to areas of research already established within family communication by demonstrating the nature of ongoing father-son relationships. More specifically, this study was able to more thoroughly examine the relationship between father adult-son affectionate communication, satisfaction, solidarity, and overall satisfaction and the correlations between these relational variables.
