| In Falling Man, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, and Saturday, Don DeLillo, Mohsin Hamid, and Ian McEwan actively historicize the post-9/11 period, revealing that events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks have the power to change the way we view and experience the world. To examine the question of what it means to live in a post-9/11 world, I have applied the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan to my analysis of these three post-9/I 1 novels, each of which renders a specific post-9/11 historical moment in what Mikhail Bakhtin calls a chronotope. Read together, the novels not only reveal specific historical moments, they allow for the examination of the process by which we reconstruct the Lacanian Symbolic. I categorize these novels as symbolic crisis narratives, a subcategory of historical novels. |
