It is a rarity today not only to discover but to be supported in the discovery of a vision of the face of Christ in modern art; and perhaps this draught of discovery and support is precisely why such a vision should be sought out and referenced, now more than ever. At the turn of the 20th century, for the breath of a decade extant between our two World Wars, Mexican Muralism thrived in North America; and one particular artist's work, above all others, paved the way for a truly American style of painting: Jose Clemente Orozco's Prometheus. My thesis discourses on the Christian iconography present in the seemingly pagan subject matter of this fresco, painted at Pomona College in 1930, and proves the relevance of incorporating perspectives from the past - be they Classical, Biblical or otherwise, into the Christ-conscious understandings of a transcendent present.
