Abstract/Summary:
Chinese culture is widespread in American society, but underrepresented in works by non-Chinese composers. To expand the base of Chinese culture in classical music, the writer examines the piece The Painted Skin, a dodecaphonic composition using Sprechstimme, which was written on a well-known Chinese story, Liao Zai Zhi Yi. This work was the result of a collaboration between the writer and the American composer Armand Qualliotine. Information is included on the composer, the author of the Chinese story, Pu Song Lin, and the English translator, Dr. Jeanne Faurot.; Through the project, the writer found that collaboration with a composer is very helpful in interpreting contemporary music, and she would encourage all musicians to work with a composer. Through working on and premiering this piece, the writer perceived it to be a great representation of Chinese culture in America, and that musicians should encourage other such works to increase awareness of Chinese culture, or other cultures, within classical music.
