Abstract/Summary:
The Leon Russianoff Clarinet Method, 21st-Century Edition project consists of two parts: an analysis of the original Method for Clarinet and a new five-volume version of the original two-volume work. The analysis offers a description of the structure of the revised edition. Particular attention is given to editorial changes that go beyond mere corrections. A new primary source---a copy of the Method that has corrections in Russianoff's own hand---is one of the main documents used. The section concludes with some newly discovered photographs of Russianoff. The second part of the project is the five-volume Leon Russianoff Clarinet Method, 21st-Century Edition. All the original music and text were reentered into this new work, which includes recently discovered annotations by Russianoff that were selected and transcribed for the new edition. The analysis portion outlines the rational and strategy for undertaking the revised edition. The author reviews the original Method and examines the life of American clarinetist and teacher Leon Russianoff (1916-1990). The analysis also includes an overview of the evolution Russianoff's teaching style and attempts to answer questions about the development of his methodologies and philosophy, as well as a timeline that helps readers understand how Russianoff came to conceive and publish his Method for Clarinet.
