This thesis studies and explores basic practice in the technical training of clarinet.Basic practice is a kind of daily practice. It encompasses all technical levels that are embodied in all kinds of musical works in a given period so that the play may be equipped with prior experience and cognition of the technique categories of the works he is going to play. This thesis consists of three chapters.Chapter One is dedicated to the discussion of basic practice and it starts from comprehensive ability, then moves on to technical training, and finally,to basic practice, the focus of the whole article. This chapter is composed of two sections:the first illustrates the training of comprehensive ability including its purpose and approach and the second, technical training including also the purpose and approach.Chapter Two discusses Carl Baermann's Complete Method for Clarinet Op.63,which is based largely on works of tonal music. This chapter presents a systematic investigation and analysis of Baermann's method, which reveals its practical value and significance in the performance of both non-modern and modern works. This chapter is made up of three sections:the first introduces the contents of this book, clarifying and organizing different ways of such major figures as scale, arpeggio, sequence and so on;the second discusses its practical value based on an analysis in combination with the transcriptions of musical works from various periods;the third reveals the value and significance of this book in four major technical aspects.Chapter Three discusses supplementary basic practice, which is the result of the study, analysis and summarization of modern works that are largely atonal, and reveals its practical value and significance in the performance of both modern and non-modern works. This chapter is composed of three sections:the first presents the contents of supplementary basic practice from four perspectives, that is,the four basic elements of music, namely pitch, rhythm, dynamics and tempo;the second analyzes and proves the practical value of such practice through examples of clarinet works, which are largely modern;the third explores the significance of supplementary basic practice.Carl Baermann's Complete Method for Clarinet Op.63 is a method of basic practice constructed on the basis of tonal conception while supplementary basic practice,on atonal thinking. These two different approaches and perspectives,if combined, may help to enhance the player's prior cognition of both modern and non-modern works.New musical compositions of all types are always emerging with the constant change of times,so constantly changing and refined ways of basic practice are always needed so that the player's techniques could be improved and enriched to a greater extent.
