Background. Advanced practice psychiatric mental health nurses (APPNs) are presented with various opportunities to extend their role to new practice sites, but there is little in the way of scholarly writing that provides APPNs with examples of using a nursing framework to develop and implement a new or expanded role.;Objectives. This article describes the process of introducing the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) role to a behavioral/mental health child care agency that was previously unfamiliar with it.;Design. A case report format utilized principles of participatory, evidence-based, patient-focused process (PEPPA) to frame the development of a new APPN role.;Results. The PEPPA framework was a useful, empowering tool to introduce a new role to resistant stakeholders.;Conclusion. Advanced practice psychiatric mental health nurses could benefit from additional research in the area of role development and role transition.;Keywords.
