Abstract/Summary:
This study was designed to develop a clinical prediction rule (CPR) to identify clinical characteristics of older adults with chronic low back pain (CLBP) that influence change in function resulting from an endurance training program. Demographics, self-report and physical examination measures were collected and categorized within the International Classification of Function (ICF) framework. "Improvement" and "no-improvement" in function were categorized based on the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of 10 points on the physical function scale (SF-36). Each measured component in the ICF showed statistically significant, but weak associations with change in function. We could not identify cut offs for these predictors (ROC area under the curve < 0.5); therefore could not develop a CPR. PF-10 demonstrated limited responsiveness for patients with higher baseline function. Endurance training may not benefit all older adults with CLBP. Clinicians should focus on improving adherence and identifying treatments which best address functional limitations.
