Abstract/Summary:
Motor vehicle collisions are a primary cause of serious injury and death in the Province of New Brunswick. The costs resulting from collision-related injuries contribute considerably to the overall economic impact of collisions. Developing a better understanding of motor vehicle collisions and the resulting costs enables the implementation of cost-effective countermeasures aimed at reducing the impact of collisions, both economically and socially.;The analysis focuses on the human, vehicle, roadway, and environmental factors of collisions and their influence on the resulting health care costs. Recommendations are made related to driver age, impaired driving, speeding, roadway type, and animal collisions. These results provide an added resource for those reviewing and evaluating related transportation policy, identifying target areas where mitigative policy should reduce the burden of collision injuries on the health care system.;This study provides an analysis of motor vehicle collisions and the resulting health care costs in New Brunswick. The analysis was facilitated using a unique database linking detailed collision data with the direct health care costs for collision victims. The health care costs are a directly measured, tangible outcome variable that provides a valuable perspective of the relationships between collision factors and the injury outcome of victims. This research identifies several key variables and relationships from a health care perspective rather than traditional collision rate/frequency methods, adding to the knowledge and understanding of collisions in New Brunswick.
