Abstract/Summary:
Twenty patients, ten diagnosed with mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) and ten age, sex and smoking history matched controls, were chosen to participate in a study evaluating the change in their periodontal status over a 5 year period. Parameters evaluated included plaque score, gingival index, bleeding index, probing depths, recession, clinical attachment level, mobility, furcation involvement, number of missing teeth and Machtei criteria, a previously defined criteria for periodontitis. The results revealed that MMP patients had statistically significant increases in only gingival index scores and lingual recession at both examinations. Both groups demonstrated statistically significant increases in attachment loss and facial/lingual recession over the 5 years, but when comparing the amount of change between groups, there were no statistically significant differences. It was concluded that MMP patients are at no higher risk for demonstrating progression of periodontal disease.
