Abstract/Summary:
In recent years, the discipline of oncology has undergone many positive changes; however, there is growing concern that young adults diagnosed with cancer are falling into a gap in both medical and non-medical services. Addressing this gap, this study used a community-based research approach, recruiting 10 young adults between the ages of 15-30 for whom a diagnosis of cancer occurred between these ages. The participants took part in an asynchronous, online discussion forum. Using qualitative methodology, this thesis explored the interpersonal relationship experiences of young cancer survivors. Findings revealed that cancer was an intrusive element, changing the relationships of these young adults. More specifically, the difficulty of "talking for real" and communicating with parents, friends, peers and romantic partners was expressed. Hearing the experiences of these young adults may motivate stakeholders in this field to act to reduce the disconnection between the needs and services of this population.
