Abstract/Summary:
This study examined social support and coping strategies as predictors of quality of life among individuals with multiple sclerosis using the Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life Inventory, which assesses MS symptoms and its impact on quality of life, and the Coping Responses Inventory, which assesses eight sets of approach and avoidance coping strategies. To illustrate how such measures addressed important issues in stress and coping, examples were presented from various studies among various health conditions. The data analyzed were collected from 96 individuals with MS attending support groups throughout three MS chapters from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The correlations assessed relationships between social support and coping strategies; and demographics, illness factors, and coping strategies. Regression analyses showed significant relationships between illness factors, coping strategies and physical QOL, and a significant relationship between social support and mental quality of life. Thus, a stress and coping model was appropriate for the study of individuals with multiple sclerosis. Finally, implications of the work for practitioners were examined. Directions for future research were also considered.
