Abstract/Summary:
The work herein reports the response and reaction of Strategically Tuned Absolutely Resilient Structures (STARS) undergoing Charpy and ballistic impact tests. Until this investigation, no prior Charpy or ballistic impact data existed for STARS. Prior work included static tests to quantify behavior and material properties, and dynamic tests to establish modal parameters. The major goal of this investigation is to characterize the impact properties of the tested material and to establish a potential for energy transfer and storage. In addition, these test results should have significant usefulness for potential military applications.; Charpy and ballistic tests were conducted; energy absorption of impact was recorded. Post-impact analysis was also conducted, including documentation of spall and fragmentation phenomena. That analysis showed that 13% to 75% of kinetic energy had been absorbed by impact, and the magnitude of the percentage was dependent on material configuration. In addition, post-impact analysis revealed the absence of shear-plugging as well as small spall formation.
