Abstract/Summary:
Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands began arriving in California in the 1850s as whalers and miners seeking economic opportunities not available in the Azores. These initial Azorean immigrants established settlement patterns and social networks that would influence later Azorean immigrants and create a perpetual chain of immigration to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Area. The permanent settlement of Azoreans in the community of San Leandro, located in the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Area, from 1850 to 1920 had an impact on the landscape of historical San Leandro. The influence of these Azorean residents is evident in the cultural landscape. An exploration of different aspects of Azorean ethnic heritage apparent in the cultural landscape is conducted through an examination of Azorean involvement in the economic, social and political landscapes of historical San Leandro. Azoreans brought with them their way of life from the Azores Islands and through their daily activities shaped the landscape of San Leandro into a reflection of their ethnic heritage.
