Abstract/Summary:
Using recycled materials is a part of the growing sustainable construction and renovation industry. This thesis examines the social, environmental and economic aspects of using such materials in construction. It demonstrates that the use of such materials in construction when appropriate is one step toward improving sustainability. Case studies that examine the use of recycled materials in two municipal construction projects and in an apartment renovation are highlighted. The benefits, as well as the problems, costs, and difficulties of integrating recycled building materials into current construction methods are discussed.
