Abstract/Summary:
This thesis presents a detailed analysis of energy and exergy utilization, in order to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the energy resources utilization within an urban centre, Calgary.;The developed model is used to identify energy and exergy losses in all sub-groups, which allows the identification of potential areas for improvement. The model is particularly useful for optimizing the total energy usage as well as in identifying areas that cause energy wastage or misuse within the municipality and hence decreasing the extent of energy usage and the environmental impacts associated with energy production and utilization.;From an energy consumption point of view, Calgary is sub-grouped into six main sectors, namely energy generation, residential, commercial, industrial, transportation and agricultural. For each sub-group, the sectoral energy and exergy efficiencies are obtained. Calgary's overall energy and exergy efficiencies were found to be 40.9% and 15.7%, respectively. It is shown that there are energy and exergy inefficiencies in all sectors and that there is a significant potential for increasing the exergy efficiency in the city.
