Abstract/Summary:
This thesis explores the bonds between architecture and landscape; first seeking an understanding of landscape, and then engaging the landscape with new forms. York Redoubt, located at the entrance to Nova Scotia's Halifax Harbour, is both the place of research and a testing ground. Its steep coastal topography and military narrative are the major drivers for a proposed pilot project of four shelters and a gathering place. Each element reinterprets existing landscape strategies, and together they propose a new layer of use for York Redoubt.
