Abstract/Summary:
The kinetics of epoxidation of chalcone in a biphasic water/heptanes medium system consisting of the substrate chalcone, oxidant hydrogen peroxide, base sodium hydroxide, and surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide was investigated. The empirical rate law was established to be: rate=k&sqbl0;chalcone&sqbr0;0.74&sqbl0;DTAB&sqbr0; 0.50&sqbl0;NaOH&sqbr0;0.87&sqbl0;H2 O2&sqbr0;1.53 where the rate constant was calculated to be 6.96E-05 M -2.6sec-1 at a pH of 12.4, and 2.52E-04 M-2.6 sec-1 for the pH range of 10.0 to 12.4. As a preliminary study, the activation energy of the reaction was determined to be 25.9 kJ/mol.
